Final Power Rankings - 2023

#BetweenTheSheets: Final Power Rankings of 2023

Who ends the calendar year atop the mountain?

"The best way to spread Christmas cheer
is singing loud for all to hear"
- Buddy, "Elf"

You got it, Buddy!

And curling fans have lots to cheer and sing about as we close out the first half of the 2023/24 curling season.

There may be a few athletes who will be singing extra loud this season too...

Looking at you, Joel Retornaz!!

But even for those who may have not seen the results match pre-season expectations, remember one important line from Kate McCallister in "Home Alone":

"This is Christmas. The season of perpetual hope."

All is not lost. The true excitement of a curling season is still to come.

Do not lose hope. Continue to chase those dreams. And come back in 2024 ready to fight harder than ever before.

But first, enjoy some Christmas delights and time with family and friends.

We aren't heartless monsters after all...

 #BetweenTheSheets: A Month To Remember

Bye Bye Rocktober, Hello November

Welcome to the best month of the year: November!

Good bye, Rocktober. You were fun. But now we welcome my favourite month.

Ok, maybe I am personally biased with having a birthday this month but November is still a great month.

The weather is still in transition mode from Fall to Winter.

We take the time to remember those who fought for our country and honour those who died in the line of duty during Remembrance Day observances.

We wrap up one continental curling championship at the beginning and get excited for another in a few weeks.

We get some Grand Slam of Curling excitement.

We get to watch (and support) our fav male curlers rock the 'stache for #Movember.

Yup, we see you starting early this year Catlin Schneider 👀👀

Plus we get to "fall" back with a time change. We get Black Friday shopping.

And we get one final month of relaxation before a hectic, and often stressful, Christmas season begins.

Don't hate on November rockheads. Soak it in and love it.

Happy Halloween Weekend of Booo-tacular Curling

"Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn, and cauldron bubble"
- Macbeth

The pre-Halloween weekend provided a few Macbeth-esque qualities for those who stepped on the ice.

Was it "double, double" on the scoreboard?

Or was it a weekend filled with "toil and trouble"?

Maybe it was more a weekend of Morticia Addams excitement:

"Last night you were unhinged.
You were like some desperate, howling demon.
You frightened me.
Do it again!"

Sometimes you can get on a roll and just dominate your competition, leaving even your own teammates and fans in awe at your curling abilities.

For some teams it was a spooky scare of a weekend.

For some, it was a weekend full of Halloween treats.

And for a select few, they rose above to become the Jack Skellington on ice:

"I am the pumpkin king."

World championship tickets are on the ice in Kelowna

"Only those who risk going too far
can find out how far one can go"
- T.S. Eliot

The British poet, playwright and publisher may have been foreshadowing the growth of curling around the world.

For many nations competing at the upcoming Pan Continental Curling Championships, there will be some risks.

Some may be stepping on world competitive ice for the first time. And that can be risky and scary.

Some have dreams of competing at upcoming world championships.

And some have aspirations of becoming the best in the world.

Regardless of competing in an A Division or B Division, each team will have risk in stepping on the ice.

Whether it is to challenge themselves or to #growthesport for the nation on their back or live up to high expectations of themselves, teams will be pushing themselves this week in Kelowna.

And, in doing so, we will find out just how far they can go.

One slide out of the hack at a time during a grueling week of continental curling action.

Tour Challenge debrief + Power Rankings update

Lucky 14!

Ok maybe not lucky for everyone but it is the #TwineTime lucky number so this is a lucky week.

#SlamSeason has officially begun with the Tour Challenge tossing its last rocks on Sunday and crowing 4 champions.

One added to her legacy.

A second is on his path to creating #HIStory.

A Tier II champion is returning to Tier I.

And another is following in the slide path of a compatriot.

And while the action on the ice was great, the path to playoffs was a bit slippery.

Plus, WHERE WAS THE ORANGE??

Don't forget, we also crowned our first World Champions of the season!!

Orange who?
Orange you glad it's Tour Challenge Time?!

This joke has been used over and over again for these Tour Challenge preview blog posts.

And I just cannot help myself from doing so again this year. #SorryNotSorry

But when your favourite colour is orange and the sport you blog about bring orange rings to the rink, can you really blame me? 🟠

Bring on the Tide Pod Challenge....err, I mean the Grand Slam of Curling Tour Challenge.

Who sits atop the mountain heading into Slam Season?

Welcome to Week 13 of the Power Rankings.

And it leads us to ask the question: "Are you ready for #SlamSeason?"

The first Grand Slam of Curling event hits this ice this weekend in Niagara Falls with the Tour Challenge.

The biggest event of the #gsoc season with 32 competing. 16 in the Tier I. 16 in the Tier II.

With two tiers competing and both being a dual gender event, there will be a total of 64 teams chasing grand slam glory.

Excited yet?

While there are many more world and continental championship events to follow, this event is the first slide out of the hack for the World Curling Federation.

Entered the Asian Domination Era?

As Canadian curling fans come out from a holiday weekend, the blog hopes everyone was able to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday and give thanks and love to those around them.

There certainly was a lot of curling over the long weekend for Canadian curling fans.

But many may be left asking, for a Canadian holiday, was it was another continent who had all the celebrations?

S2324 W11 - Happy Thanksgiving

#BetweenTheSheets: Happy Thanksgiving

A Thanksgiving tradition continues in Calgary at the Autumn Gold

Welcome to Thanksgiving weekend in Canada!

A time where we, as Canadians, give thanks to everything we are thankful for in our lives.

From (hopefully) good health to a happy home to loving family to great friends...let us take this upcoming weekend to reflect and celebrate.

And while some will be hitting the ice this weekend to compete at World Curling Tour events, thus missing time with their family and friends, we hope all of them take time with their teammates and fans to celebrate a sport which can bring people together.

This weekend, truly ask yourself "What are YOU Thankful For?" and share it with those important people your life.

Sport is sport. At the end of the day, we can never take anything for granted. Live life to the fullest and enjoy the ride while we can.

From #TwineTime to all of you rockheads, Happy Thanksgiving!

This is a special year as the blog celebrates 10 years of existence. Over those 10 years, I have met wonderful people. From athletes competing in the sport to those behind the ice to volunteers across the globe and fans from every walk of life.

I truly am thankful for all of you who continue to support, share, like and read this blog during the curling season.

I wish you and your loved ones a happy holiday weekend.

Tour Challenge field is set

From a blockbuster PointsBet Invitational #Sweep16 bracket event to teams confirming their tickets to the first #gsoc of the season, the final weekend of September had the curling community talking.

The top women's rivalry in Canada wrote another chapter in the #PBInvitational finale.

A men's team who looked ready for a flight home in the QF (and SF) survived and were able to #DefendTheIce in improbable fashion.

The Tour Challenge revealed the Tier I and Tier II teams heading to Niagara Falls in a few weeks.

And, on the World Curling Tour scene, Asian nations continue to show up and show off their talents against their Canadian counterparts...almost sweeping a playoff bracket in Vernon.

We welcomed the Fall season last weekend and survived (hopefully) some Fall Frenzy on ice.

What an action packed weekend of curling!!

From epic upsets to #DefendTheIce results to monumental comebacks to a changing of the guard, this weekend really saw everything and anything we could ask for out of the sport.

Now we try to catch our breath and look back on the weekend that was.

With so much curling to watch, and so many teams hitting the ice, the Power Rankings must be due for their first major shakeup of the season.

11 events hit tour ice this weekend

The first day of Fall occurs on Saturday September 23.

While the world prepares for a season of pumpkin spice lattes, Thanksgiving turkey, Halloween scares and the subtle colours of red, orange and brown, the curling world prepares for a frantic frenzy of curling tour action.

DYK brown is actually not a colour but rather just a very, very, very dark shade of orange? No, seriously...check THIS out. #TheMoreYouKnow

There will be 6 men's events and 5 women's events hitting the ice this weekend, taking place across Canada and in the USA.

Top teams hit the ice, some making their season debuts.

And others will look to build on early season success...or turnaround early season stumbles.

Bring. It. On.

Plus...we are approaching slam season!!

The emergence of #TeamUpset?

If you are a loyal #TwineTime blog reader (and of course you are, right? 🤣), you are familiar with the #TeamUpset term.

The blog started the #TeamUpset reference years ago, previously noted as the "Dark Horse" in the preview posts.

A #TeamUpset is a team who is entered into an event, often ranked outside the Top 20 or 25, and is a team who may not be considered a title contender but a playoff challenger.

Fast forward to this past weekend and we are seeing those #TeamUpset challengers making deep playoffs runs and becoming tour title contenders.

This weekend we see the return of the women's world champions, Team Tirinzoni.

There is a stellar women's field ready to hit the ice in Basel.

We also see a few international teams from New Zealand, Germany and Guyana making their tour debuts.

A lot to get excited about.

But, before we do so, we were also reminded this week that curling is not the be all, end all of life.

Curlers are humans after all. And this week we, as a curling community, shifted our fandom to positive vibes for one of our athletes.

Canada vs. The World: Who is Winning?

Last week's #TourLifePredictions blog post previewed a full slate of World Curling Tour events across Canada.

The focus was on the emerging Canada vs. The World theme we are seeing in the sport.

International teams are not only competing in more tour stops in Canada (due to Canada offering more tour events perhaps but that is a whole other discussion) but are they also winning more compared to the home nation teams?

And, we are not only seeing an increase in international teams but also international representation.

This past weekend saw teams from Scotland, Korea, Japan, USA, Mexico and Portugal compete.

We will be seeing more representation at tour events later this month with Sweden, Germany, New Zealand and Guyana for example.

Open those welcoming arms Canadian curling fans...the world is coming!

So when the last rock stopped spinning on weekend action, who did come out on top: Canada or The World?

The World Curling Tour is heading into Week 7 of tour life. We have seen a number of events take place in Europe and Asia in the opening weeks.

And yes, a few tour stops in Canada.

But now things get serious.

And parents are leaping for joy to finally get the kids out of the home and back to a routine.

Why should curling be any different?

Athletes are dusting off the brooms but also maybe showing off some new threads.

Tour event organizers are preparing to welcome a bunch of rowdy, excited curlers into their clubs to compete once again.

And fans are getting excited to cheer on their favourite teams to championship glory.

2023 Golden Granite Awards

#BetweenTheSheets: And The Award Goes To...

The Return of the Golden Granite Awards

COVID-19 can knock you down but it cannot keep you down!

After the pandemic derailed our curling seasons over the past few years, 2022/2023 seemed to mark a full return to our regularly scheduled program.

And with that comes the return of the best post-season tradition on ice: The Golden Granite Awards!

Ok, I may be biased and hyping up my own awards show. But why not, right?

The Golden Granite Awards were first handed out at the conclusion of the 2015/2016 season.

TwineTime had no idea if the sport of curling would be interested in participating in award season.

But the feedback from the rock heads leaned into the Golden Granite Awards and history was made.

The awards continued in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020.

Who knew a pandemic would try to ruin a milestone event when the Golden Granite Awards celebrated the 5 year history mark?

And while there may be some gap years in between from the last time these golden statues were handed out, you cannot keep a Golden Granite in the hack for too long.

All your favourite categories return for 2023. Each day a new category will be announced and the Golden Granite award winner will be revealed.

Yes, it means you have to come back to this blog space daily to check out the winner.

The Oscars are a 5 hour show and you still watch. Why can't the Golden Granite Awards be drawn out over multiple days? Curling over Movies right?!

Enough pre-show banter. Time to raise the red curtain and celebrate the return of the Golden Granite!

Champions Cup Preview

 #BetweenTheSheets: Champions Cup Preview

A fond farewell the final slam event...for now?

Are you ready to say a fond farewell rockheads?

When the final rock stops spinning at the Champions Cup in Regina, we will be saying a few farewells.

We will say goodbye to the 2022/23 curling season. And what a season it has been.

But, perhaps to a great level of sadness, we will say goodbye to the Champions Cup event.

It has been announced the Champions Cup event will officially be put on hiatus after this season.

An event started in 2016 will be taking its last slide at The Co-operators Centre on Sunday May 7 with the men's and women's finals.

It will be a bit sad to see this event fall into the boards.

The Champions Cup really is a celebratory event, bringing together event champions for one final Battle Royal to crown the ultimate Champion of the Season.

Unlike other #gsoc events, qualification into this event is not based on ranking points. If you want a ticket to this event, you need to earn your spot...literally!

Each team competing won an event this season, whether it be a Grand Slam of Curling event or a tour event or a world championship or a national championship.

There are no freebie handouts in this field. No event lives up to the #WinAndIn motto more than the Champions Cup.

And now we will bit it a fond farewell...but maybe only temporarily? 🤞🤞

WMDCC2023 Preview

#BetweenTheSheets: World Mixed Doubles Curling

Championship Preview

20 nations compete for world championship glory

Enjoying the week off of curling rockheads?

We just wrapped up a leaping (Brad Thiessen) good time at the Players' Championships and we are now looking ahead to the next world championship event on the curling calendar.

The World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship and World Senior Curling Championships are up next in the Season of Champions.

Before sliding into the preview though, similar to last year's preview post, can we take a moment to once again admire the event logo?

I don't think enough credit is given to the careful consideration and thought placed into developing these World Curling Federation logos.

When we look at the #WMDCC2023 and #WSCC2023 logos, the first striking image to the eye is the flying curling rock.

Outside of the fact the rock is yellow for mixed doubles and red for seniors, you may not notice the subtle reference the image has to the host location.

Gangneung, Korea will be the welcoming location for both championships. You may be familiar with this location as it hosted all the ice events during the 2018 Winter Olympics. And yes, that does include curling.

But the "flying rock" is not just placed within the logo by chance. It is actually a subtle reference to the host city's emblem.

Check out the Emblem of Gangneung to the right.

The reference is subtle but inclusive.

For the emblem, the red sun represents the sunrise and the blue wave represents the sea. The white background is also purposeful, representing clean nature, the citizens' mild temper and limitless potential.

Did you know Gangneung is close to a very popular tourist spot called Jeongdongjin?

Jeongdongjin is one of the most popular spots in Korea to watch the sunrise, especially on New Year's Day.

When we look back at the event logo, the curling rock is positioned like a sun while the tail end of the rock and the imagery on the bottom looks representative of the sea.

Some may say perhaps I am reading too much into the logo but I really like the careful consideration made by WCF when finalizing logo's for these major international championships.

If you have never noticed this in the past, start looking at the logo's in the future. They really do give respect to the host cities/nations.

And, as mentioned last year, WCF really should seize the day on these clever logos.

There is heavy merchandising and marketing opportunities to be made here.

Hats. Shirts. Pins. Socks. Drinkware.

Bring. It. On.

For the fans of course!

Thanks for listening to the #TwineTime TedTalk.

Bring on the world championships.

Players' Championship Preview

#BetweenTheSheets: Players' Championship Preview

Welcome to the final major of the season

"The more things change, the more they stay the same"

This has been the championship theme for curling in 2023.

We saw it at the Scotties.

We saw it at the Brier.

We saw it at the World Women's Curling Championship.

And then we wrapped up the World Men's Curling Championship with a different result.

Sweden's Team Edin was unable to stay #5Alive and lost in the QF round of the playoffs.

And a new foursome ascended to the throne as Kings of Curling: Scotland's Team Mouat.

Mouat defeated Canada's Team Gushue in the final Sunday afternoon to earn their first world championship...and end the Scottish streak.

Switzerland's Team Schwaller captured bronze earlier in the day on Sunday by knocking off 2022 world bronze medal winner Italy's Team Retornaz.

For what it is worth, #TwineTime did accurately predict all 6 #WMCC2023 playoff teams, both finalists AND the final result in the preview post. Just sayin' 😁

The championship theme may have been disrupted in Ottawa but could it be retained in Toronto?

When looking at the defending champions at the Players' Championship, it just might happen once again.

March may be ending but the madness on ice continues.

With the dust not even collecting on the rocks in Sweden from the World Women's Curling Championship, we are already looking ahead to the World Men's Curling Championship.

We celebrated the accomplishment of Switzerland's Team Tirinzoni being able to achieve the #4peat in winning their 4th straight world championship.

And now our focus will be on the #5peat...as in Sweden's Team Edin looking to win their 5th straight world championship.

Tirinzoni's accomplishment was remarkable. Can Edin one up their Euro friends and create #HIStory?

If the #STOH2023, #Brier2023 and #WWCC2023 results taught us anything it is the blog motto of "the more things change, the more they stay the same" could live on once again in Ottawa.

 #BetweenTheSheets: Brier 2023 Parting Rocks

Saying goodbye to a #HIStoric Brier in London

See the #STOH2023 Parting Rocks blog post?

"The more things change, the more they stay the same?"

The Brier competition was fierce. New look teams emerged as front runners.

A young sheriff brought his crew to London looking to regain order of the past and put Manitoba back atop the Canadian curling world.

And a handful of young players emerged, breathing new life into the sport and making many excited for the future.

But the end result remains the same.

As we saw in Kamloops with the Scotties, Team Canada once again emerged atop the podium when the last rock stopped spinning.

We saw change. We saw a glimpse into the future. But we also saw the present is not passing the torch quite yet.

When the rocks stopped spinning, it was the familiar faces of Team Canada standing atop the podium yet again.

Fans rejoice a full return to the Scotties

The playdown parties are officially in the rearview mirror. Curling fans have had a week to rest up from the past few weeks of playdown celebrations and now we enter the MAIN EVENT!

As mentioned in this very blog preview space last season, and worth mentioning again, don't you wish we could have some Canadian celebrity sing an opening theme song similar to what we see for "Sunday Night Football" or "Monday Night Football"?

Canada is loaded with musical talent, why hasn't the sport pounced on this yet to develop a true "Season of Champions" theme?!?!

TSN, Curling Canada, The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Science. Get that partnership going already and lets make it happen!!

We are looking at you Shawn Mendes, Deborah Cox, Arkells, Susan Aglukark, Avril Lavigne, Brett Kissel, Charlotte Cardin, Dean Brody....the list can go on and on.

We know Canadian artists are also curling fans. When can we see a full collaboration happen?

But alas, as was the case last year, the call for a "Season of Champions" theme falls on deaf ears. Maybe I really am the only one who thinks this would be a cool idea.

Oh well....

Are you ready for the 2023 Scotties Tournament of Hearts?

The After After Party

#BetweenTheSheets: The After After Party

The sun is rising on the 2023 playdown party

You know you are attending a great party when there is an after party.

You know you are having an epic evening when you find yourself attending the after after party.

While a party might let out around 1 a.m. and an after party might fizzle out around 4 a.m., an after after party goes until the sun comes out.

This is where we are at with the 2023 playdown season curling fans.

The sun set weeks ago to get the party started and we are at the point now where the sun is starting to rise once again and shine light on the Canadian national championship curling scene.

The Scotties has filled their dance card. Time for the Brier to follow.

Take another shot of Red Bull and lets keep this party going...for a few more hours at least.

This after after party will focus on the men in curling as we round out the Brier field this upcoming weekend.

Don't worry curling fans, the women will get all the attention next week in the Scotties preview post.

#Brier2023

This past weekend we added two more teams to the Brier field. ICYMI, here is your summary update:

#TeamGreen - Team Knapp: Kelly Knapp and company may have arrived at the Sask Tankard as a contender but they left as champions. And made quick work of their competition. Knapp went undefeated in the competition (5-0), qualifying for the playoffs via the A-side and dispatching past champion Steve Laycock in the page playoff and championship final. The new Sask champs took one of the shortest paths to London, Ontario from Saskatchewan. The question will be if the quick win will help or hinder them against the best at the Brier.

#PolarPower - Team Koe: Jamie Koe is the Jon Snow of the Northwest Territories. Koe ran his record at the NWT championship to a perfect 50-0 in claiming his 8th NWT title and 15th King of the North crown. Similar to Team Knapp, Koe went undefeated to claim the title, posted a perfect 6-0 record in the RR and winning the championship final over main rival Team Skauge. When the last rock settled, Koe had dominated his opposition to the tune of outscoring them 65-18!

As a reminder, here are the teams who already punched their tickets to the Tim Horton's Brier. Congratulations to the following teams:

#TeamCanada - Team Gushue
#TeamPacific - Team Gauthier
#CurlOn - Team McEwen
#FearTheMoose - Team Horgan
#Labelleprovince - Team Asselin
#TeamBluenose - Team Manuel
#TheIslanders - Team Smith
#TheRock - Team Young
#TeamArctic - Team Higgs
#PurplePower - Team Scoffin

The Brier field is becoming a mixed bag of experience alongside #NextGen talent.

Could we look back on the 2023 Brier in a few years and mark it down as being the transition year for Canadian men's curling?

The next generation starts making their move towards the future while the current generation tries to hang on for one more Olympic cycle?

This after after party is set to get your feet moving and heart jumping with excitement as we round out the Brier field with provincial championships in Alberta, Manitoba and New Brunswick.

And two of those championships, Alberta and Manitoba, will heavily factor into who receives the second chance ticket to London as the three designated wildcard teams.

Playdown Previews

#ABStrong

Enoch, AB

2022 Champion: Team Koe

Format: 12 team triple knockout with 4 qualifiers advancing to the page playoff.

#Fav

Kevin Koe.

Brendan Bottcher.

Since 2017, no other skip has represented Alberta at the Brier other than those two powerhouse names.

The teams may look different this season but the skipper names remain the same as the two favourites at the Boston Pizza Cup (Alberta championship).

Both new look teams have had consistent seasons.

Team Bottcher won the Canadian Open in January, a perfect build-up of momentum heading into this championship. The team also won a spiel earlier in the season in Okotoks, reached the SF at The Masters and the QF at The National. They own a season record of 30-11.

Team Koe has yet to find the winner's circle this season; however, they do have 3 runner-up finishes (Red Deer, Okotoks, Swift Current). They reached the SF at the Tour Challenge and QF at The National but failed to qualify at The Masters and, recently, the Canadian Open. They sport an equally impressive record of 30-17 for the season.

Interestingly enough, these two Alberta rivals have only met twice this season with Bottcher picking up the victory both times (Okotoks final, Masters RR).

Bottcher ranks #2 on the CTRS. Koe #4. We know both will be in London, regardless of the result here.

The question is which, if either, can walk into Budweiser Gardens representing the Wild Rose province.

#TeamUpset

Looking for an under the radar dark horse who could challenge the main contenders this week?

How about Daylan Vavrek's team from Sexsmith?

Vavrek sticks close to home during the season, mainly entering Alberta Curling Tour events, but has had tremendous success this season.

The team qualified for the playoffs in all 4 tour events entered this season, including two championship final appearances and one tour title (Leduc).

They sport a 20-4 record on the season as well. And while they may not play as many games as their more "well known" competitors, they are picking up W's along the way and gaining momentum.

They earned their spot on this field via the qualifier event in Okotoks back in December, going a perfect 4-0.

Vavrek is no slouch at this event either, having competed in multiple Boston Pizza Cup's and finished 3rd back in 2018.

#W2W4

Karsten Sturmay and Aaron Sluchinski.

Bottcher and Koe may be the favs and already have their "unofficial" tickets to London but the play of these other two teams may be the true wildcard factor in this competition.

Sturmay has a few tour titles under the slider this season, including winning the Golden Wrench Classic at the end of January with a perfect 8-0 record, including wins over Sluchinski (twice) and Carruthers (final). A victory that propelled the team into the Brier wildcard discussion (more on that below). The team is an impressive 43-20 on the season.

As for Sluchinski, they sport an equally impressive season record of 40-16. They won a tour title earlier in the season (Leduc, defeating Sturmay in the final) and were runner-up at the Tour Challenge Tier II slam.

Remember both teams have a few high profile names on their roster too. Sturmay is joined by J.D. Lind, coach of Team Fujisawa who just won the Japanese Curling Championships.

Sluchinski has brought on Ted Appelman as their fifth this week. Appelman has been to two Briers, as alternate for Kevin Koe's teams in 2019 (won) and 2020 (TB).

Appelman will step in while Kerr Drummond prepares to become a dad. Wishing him and his wife a healthy, happy baby as they buold their family.

With respect to all the teams competing in this field this week, Sturmay and Sluchinski are the two teams who could knock off the "Big Two" and create some aftershocks heading into London.

If the pre-event seeding holds to form, a Final Four playoff between Bottcher, Koe, Sturmay and Sluchinski could be VERY exciting.

Qualifiers: Team Bottcher, Team Koe, Team Sturmay, Team Sluchinski

Alberta Championship: Team Bottcher def. Team Sturmay

#BuffaloHunt

Neepawa, MB

2022 Champion: Team McEwen

Format: 32 team double knockout with 8 qualifiers advancing to the playoff bracket. Playoff bracket will determine the Final Four, who advance to the page playoff championship bracket.

#Fav

Is this the year Matt Dunstone finally wins his Buffalo?

Dunstone is a 4-time Brier participant, including winning back-to-back bronze medals in 2020 and 2021, but those appearances were under the neighbour flag of Saskatchewan.

Dunny is back in his home province chasing one title that has eluded his young resume thus far.

To say winning a Manitoba championship is a life-long dream for Dunstone is an understatement.

He has worn the Buffalo in his junior years but it has not come to be in men's play, including losing the 2016 Manitoba final to Mike McEwen while being junior champion.

This season, Dunstone and his new team have been one of the most consistent teams on tour. They have picked up a few tour titles (Red Deer, DEKALB Superspiel), reached the final of the season-opening PointsBet Invitational and the #gsoc Tour Challenge and reached the SF at The National and QF at the Canadian Open.

Dunstone will be in London for the Brier as he sits atop the CTRS rankings heading into the Viterra Championship. Should he falter this week, he will be #WC1 at the Brier.

However, Dunstone was a WC team last year. He is done playing the "joker" in the field and looks ready to collect his first men's Manitoba championship.

If he can withstand the pressure of being the fav, and the immense pressure he may be putting on himself wanting this title so bad, he is not only the team to beat in this field but also a main threat for the Brier title next month.

#TeamUpset

In a bloated 32 team double knockout, there are so many options for potential #TeamUpset flag bearers. It all depends on the draw. Those teams who avoid the Dunstone and/or Team Carruthers sections of the draw have an increased chance of qualification.

And there are some interesting teams to keep your eyes on as dark horse contenders.

Braden Calvert and Corey Chambers have been well-known names with success in Manitoba for a number of years. Both find themselves in the same bracket, alongside Tanner Lott and Steen Sigurdson.

What about J.T. Ryan? A #NextGen skip still looking to find his path in a crowded Manitoba curling scene.

He finds himself in the same bracket as fellow up and comer Riley Smith and the experience of Kelly Marnoch.

Steve Irwin and Sean Grassie are back to chase the Buffalo. They sit alongside Carruthers in the top bracket.

Jordan Peters, Hayden Forrester and Justin Richter find their names drawn into the same bracket as Dunstone.

There are 8 playoff spots available after the initial knockout stage. A few of these #TeamUpset teams could make names for themselves and survive the double knockout. And, if they do, anything can happen in the next stage once you gain some confidence and momentum.

When you play with house money at an after after party, you have everything to gain and nothing to lose.

#W2W4

If assumptions hold true, Dunstone and Carruthers will be the teams to beat. But who joins them along the path?

There are some impressive names to watch out for, most listed as #TeamUpset challengers.

But what about Ryan Wiebe?

Wiebe may just be the dark horse team many curling fans are not as familiar with but opposition does not want to face.

Wiebe currently sits #10 on the CTRS rankings. And while they are out of the running for a WC spot in London, sitting that high on the list is no fluke and they should be considered a very dangerous threat to win this championship.

The team is 36-13 on the season, won the Mother Club Fall Curling Classic early in the season and reached the QF at the Tour Challenge Tier II.

They also have qualified in 7 of 9 events this season, including reaching a tour final in Winnipeg and at the Manitoba Curling Tour Championship in December. The team also hit up the Golden Wrench last month in Arizona as a tune-up for this championship, finishing with a QF result.

And finally, we cannot talk about this Viterra Championship without discussing Team Carruthers.

Carruthers himself has been to 10 Brier's, winning the title (and world championship) in 2011 with Jeff Stoughton.

When Carruthers announced his new team this season, re-joining forced with past teammate Jason Gunnlaugson, many thought this would be the Manitoba Super Team to beat. Almost similar to the past merger of Carruthers and best bud Mike McEwen.

The new look team even won the PointsBet Invitational to start their season.

But the results tailored off a bit as the season wore on, with up and down mixed results. And then the shocking announcement was made of Carruthers parting ways with Gunnlaugson.

While Carruthers added Brad Jacobs to the line-up for the slam events, the decision was finally made to add Matt Lorenz as lead for the Manitoba championship but only in a supporting role.

The big question will be how this team comes together with a new lead, should he play, or if they can survive with 3. It should be minor but the lingering whispers of what went wrong between Carruthers-Gunnlaugson will follow the team.

Carruthers is also in the running for a WC spot in London, depending on results in Alberta.

This is going to be a championship worth watching, for so many different reasons.

And it still begs the question, #WhereIsGunner?

Playoff Bracket Qualifiers: Team Carruthers, Team Wiebe, Team Chambers, Team Dunstone, Team Irwin, Team R. Smith, Team Calvert, Team Peters

Championship Bracket Qualifiers: Team Dunstone, Team Carruthers, Team Wiebe, Team Chambers

Manitoba Championship: Team Dunstone def. Team Wiebe

#TeamAcadia

Moncton, NB

2022 Champion: Team Grattan

Format: 8 team RR. Top 3 advance to playoff with top seed earning bye to the final.

#Fav

James Grattan is back to #DefendTheIce once again.

Grattan is a 14-time New Brunswick champion and has been the "face that runs the place" in the province for over 20 years.

Once nicknamed "Jimmy the Kid", the 48 year old still has some tricks up his sleeve and remains a favourite anytime he enters the provincial championship.

Grattan will have a little less "drama" circulating him this season compared to last year when the team picked up Darren Moulding as vice and made a run to the Brier. Everyone remembers the highly electric RR game at the Brier between NB's Team Grattan and Team Canada's Team Bottcher, right?

Grattan is a two-time Brier bronze medal winner (1997, 2002).

#TeamUpset

Watch out for #NextGen stud Jack Smeltzer folks.

If you remember last year's provincial championship, Smeltzer was the main challenger to Grattan. Smeltzer reached both the A and B-side qualifier games (last year was a triple knockout format) and looked to be on the cusp of moving from challenger to contender.

While Smeltzer lost the C-side SF to Grattan and missed the playoff bracket last year, the team returns this season looking to improve on their result.

Curling fans may remember seeing Smeltzer face off against Kevin Koe at the PointsBet Invitational at the start of the season as well. Koe got the 13-4 win but Smeltzer may have gained more in experience.

If you watched the streaming of the NB Scotties, Smeltzer was also doing commentary and showing his high knowledge of the sport for such a young age.

#W2W4

People underestimate the quality of play in New Brunswick. This provincial championship field is stacked with experience.

Scott Jones and Jeremy Mallais.

Mike Kennedy and Grant Odishaw.

Jason Roach and Darren Roach.

Zach Eldridge was the only team to reach the playoffs and challenge Grattan last season.

And these are all athletes with Brier experience.

Add in Smeltzer as an up and coming NB threat.

And we have past NB junior champ and Canadian junior runner-up (2014) Rene Comeau teaming up with skip Alex Robichaud.

Alberta and Manitoba may get most of the buzz this week but do not sleep on the competitive field in New Brunswick curling fans.

Qualifiers: Team Grattan, Team Jones, Team Smeltzer

New Brunswick Championship: Team Grattan def. Team Smeltzer

#WC

2022 Representatives: Team Gushue (#WC1), Team Dunstone (#WC2), Team Gunnlaugson (#WC3)

Format: Top three teams who did not win their provincial/territorial championship based on CTRS.

Wildcard Watchlist: Team Dunstone, Team Bottcher, Team Koe, Team Carruthers, Team Sturmay

#W2W4

When the CTRS standings were updated last week (after last week's blog post btw), the wildcard field was greatly reduced.

The big winner was Team Sturmay. Their victory at the Golden Wrench moved them up the rankings and put them in a great position for a Brier ticket.

It is all very simple now.

We know Dunstone, Bottcher and Koe will be in London. Whether they are representing the WC jersey or their provincial jersey is the question.

If one of them wins, Carruthers enters the chat.

If two of them win, Sturmay enters the chat.

If none of those three win, all three should still make the Brier field and we will have a few "surprise" reps in Alberta and Manitoba.

Manitoba curling fans, you will have at least two teams competing in London.

Alberta curling fans, you could have three.

Wildcard Picks: Team Koe, Team Carruthers, Team Sturmay

#StayTuned

The blog will return next week with a 100% focus on the 2023 Scotties Tournament of Hearts. A full preview of the entire field and predictions to follow.

Also, while Canadian curling fans are still fixated on provincial playdowns this week, note there are a few national championships hitting the ice as well.

The USA National Championships and Scottish Curling Championships are underway in Denver, Colorado and Dumfries, Scotland.

The US men's championships have already produced some #TeamUpset results in the opening few draws, with perennial favourites Team Shuster and Team Dropkin taking losses early.

Team Peterson and Team Anderson continue to be the #Favs for the US women's title early in the RR.

Team Mouat and Team Whyte look to be on a collision course for the Scottish men's championship while Euro bronze medal winner Team Morrison has the early lead for the women.

Both championships are offering streaming options as well.

Special shout out to Japanese Curling Championships winners Team Fujisawa and Team Yanagisawa.

Fujisawa defeated Team Kanai in the final while Yanagisawa knocked off Team Hirata to claim the title.

Congrats to both teams as they #DefendTheIce from their 2022 national championship wins.

And additional championship shout outs to Team Edin/Eriksson and Team Hassselborg for their Swedish Curling Championships wins last week.

Team Edin, led by Oskar Eriksson, defeated 2022 champ Team Landelius to claim the title while Hasselborg knocked off (and earned revenge on a previous RR loss) main rival and 2022 champ Team Wrana.

Of course remembering both Team Edin and Team Hasselborg did not compete at these championships last season due to the Winter Olympics.

Congrats to both on regaining their Swedish Curling Championship titles. #Grattis

For those competing this week, whether in Canada or USA or Scotland, good luck and good curling.
