#BetweenTheSheets: The Return of Tour Life
The season kicks off in Scotland and Switzerland
This is the time of year where teachers are preparing to welcome students back to the classroom.
Students are dreading the end of their summer vacation but perhaps excited to see friends and show off some new threads.
And parents are leaping for joy to finally get the kids out of the home and back to a routine.
Why should curling be any different?
Athletes are dusting off the brooms but also maybe showing off some new threads.
Tour event organizers are preparing to welcome a bunch of rowdy, excited curlers into their clubs to compete once again.
And fans are getting excited to cheer on their favourite teams to championship glory.
Welcome Back!

This should be a very interesting season of men's curling.
From ongoing questions of parity to sports betting to new teams to what is old remains new...there are quite a few storylines to keep your eyes peeled (again?!) this year.
The women's season preview was released yesterday.
As they say inside Chippendales, "Bring on the men!"

Hot Topics, #TeamUpset, #PowerRankings and Predictions
Hope you all enjoyed the past 3 months of a curling break.
We cannot even call it an off-season really anymore.
The season ended in May in Regina at the Champions Cup.
The season is, technically, already under way as tour events have already been played in Japan while Korea, New Zealand and Australia have already contested their national championships.
I guess the blog is already behind in previewing the upcoming season, no?
This curling break has been about as long as it takes for me to make 300+ jello shooters for an annual family camping trip in July.
Let's get the preview posts starting with the women's season preview.

2023 Golden Granite Awards
#BetweenTheSheets: And The Award Goes To...
The Return of the Golden Granite Awards
COVID-19 can knock you down but it cannot keep you down!
After the pandemic derailed our curling seasons over the past few years, 2022/2023 seemed to mark a full return to our regularly scheduled program.
And with that comes the return of the best post-season tradition on ice: The Golden Granite Awards!
Ok, I may be biased and hyping up my own awards show. But why not, right?
The Golden Granite Awards were first handed out at the conclusion of the 2015/2016 season.
TwineTime had no idea if the sport of curling would be interested in participating in award season.
But the feedback from the rock heads leaned into the Golden Granite Awards and history was made.
The awards continued in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020.
Who knew a pandemic would try to ruin a milestone event when the Golden Granite Awards celebrated the 5 year history mark?
And while there may be some gap years in between from the last time these golden statues were handed out, you cannot keep a Golden Granite in the hack for too long.
All your favourite categories return for 2023. Each day a new category will be announced and the Golden Granite award winner will be revealed.
Yes, it means you have to come back to this blog space daily to check out the winner.
The Oscars are a 5 hour show and you still watch. Why can't the Golden Granite Awards be drawn out over multiple days? Curling over Movies right?!
Enough pre-show banter. Time to raise the red curtain and celebrate the return of the Golden Granite!

Champions Cup Preview
#BetweenTheSheets: Champions Cup Preview
A fond farewell the final slam event...for now?
Are you ready to say a fond farewell rockheads?
When the final rock stops spinning at the Champions Cup in Regina, we will be saying a few farewells.
We will say goodbye to the 2022/23 curling season. And what a season it has been.
But, perhaps to a great level of sadness, we will say goodbye to the Champions Cup event.
It has been announced the Champions Cup event will officially be put on hiatus after this season.
An event started in 2016 will be taking its last slide at The Co-operators Centre on Sunday May 7 with the men's and women's finals.
It will be a bit sad to see this event fall into the boards.
The Champions Cup really is a celebratory event, bringing together event champions for one final Battle Royal to crown the ultimate Champion of the Season.
Unlike other #gsoc events, qualification into this event is not based on ranking points. If you want a ticket to this event, you need to earn your spot...literally!
Each team competing won an event this season, whether it be a Grand Slam of Curling event or a tour event or a world championship or a national championship.
There are no freebie handouts in this field. No event lives up to the #WinAndIn motto more than the Champions Cup.
And now we will bit it a fond farewell...but maybe only temporarily? 🤞🤞

Players' Championship Preview
#BetweenTheSheets: Players' Championship Preview
Welcome to the final major of the season
"The more things change, the more they stay the same"
This has been the championship theme for curling in 2023.
We saw it at the Scotties.
We saw it at the Brier.
We saw it at the World Women's Curling Championship.
And then we wrapped up the World Men's Curling Championship with a different result.
Sweden's Team Edin was unable to stay #5Alive and lost in the QF round of the playoffs.
And a new foursome ascended to the throne as Kings of Curling: Scotland's Team Mouat.
Mouat defeated Canada's Team Gushue in the final Sunday afternoon to earn their first world championship...and end the Scottish streak.
Switzerland's Team Schwaller captured bronze earlier in the day on Sunday by knocking off 2022 world bronze medal winner Italy's Team Retornaz.
For what it is worth, #TwineTime did accurately predict all 6 #WMCC2023 playoff teams, both finalists AND the final result in the preview post. Just sayin' 😁
The championship theme may have been disrupted in Ottawa but could it be retained in Toronto?
When looking at the defending champions at the Players' Championship, it just might happen once again.

#Brier2023 Parting Rocks
#BetweenTheSheets: Brier 2023 Parting Rocks
Saying goodbye to a #HIStoric Brier in London
"The more things change, the more they stay the same?"
The Brier competition was fierce. New look teams emerged as front runners.
A young sheriff brought his crew to London looking to regain order of the past and put Manitoba back atop the Canadian curling world.
And a handful of young players emerged, breathing new life into the sport and making many excited for the future.
But the end result remains the same.
As we saw in Kamloops with the Scotties, Team Canada once again emerged atop the podium when the last rock stopped spinning.
We saw change. We saw a glimpse into the future. But we also saw the present is not passing the torch quite yet.
Welcome to the 2023 Tim Hortons Brier Parting Rocks blog post.

#BetweenTheSheets: 2023 Scotties Parting Rocks
#HERstory was made in Kamloops
How does the saying go?
"The more things change, the more they stay the same?"
It kind of sums up the 2023 Scotties, no?
During the off-season teams were swapping out players, setting new lineups and preparing for a shot at Scotties glory.
When the rocks stopped spinning, it was the familiar faces of Team Canada standing atop the podium yet again.
The opposition may change. The competition format may change.
But the end result remains the same.

This past weekend we added two more teams to the Brier field. ICYMI, here is your summary update:
#TeamPacific - Team Gauthier
#TeamArctic - Team Higgs
#PurplePower - Team Scoffin
The Brier field is becoming a mixed bag of experience alongside #NextGen talent.
This after after party is set to get your feet moving and heart jumping with excitement as we round out the Brier field with provincial championships in Alberta, Manitoba and New Brunswick.

In a bloated 32 team double knockout, there are so many options for potential #TeamUpset flag bearers. It all depends on the draw. Those teams who avoid the Dunstone and/or Team Carruthers sections of the draw have an increased chance of qualification.
#W2W4
If assumptions hold true, Dunstone and Carruthers will be the teams to beat. But who joins them along the path?
